Ceramic vs carbon vs dyed tint

Ceramic, carbon and dyed are category labels rather than guarantees of equal performance. The right film depends on the glass, the vehicle or building, and what you are trying to achieve. This guide explains the trade-offs and how to ask the right questions before booking.

What "ceramic" actually describes

Ceramic films use ceramic particles to manage solar energy without relying on a very dark appearance. Performance varies between products in the same category, so ask for the data sheet of the actual film being quoted rather than the category name alone.

Carbon films

Carbon films tend to give a stable dark appearance without the dye-fading issues that dyed films can suffer over time. They usually sit between dyed and ceramic on price, and work well where appearance matters more than maximum heat rejection.

Dyed films

Dyed films are the entry-level option. They are often chosen for a privacy look on rear glazing. They can fade over years of strong sun exposure; check the warranty terms for the specific product.

Reading the data sheet

  • Visible light transmission (VLT) describes shade, not heat rejection.
  • Total solar energy rejected (TSER) or similar measures heat rejection.
  • UV blocking figures are useful for interior protection.
  • Warranty length and what it covers varies by product.

Front glazing and the law

UK light-transmission rules still apply regardless of film technology. For vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985 the windscreen must allow at least 75% of light through and the front side windows at least 70%. Discuss the intended windows before choosing any front-glazing film.

Discuss your project
