What ceramic describes

Ceramic is a film-technology category, not a guarantee that every product performs equally. Films can use ceramic particles to manage solar energy without relying on a very dark appearance. Ask for the specification of the actual product being quoted. A category label alone does not tell you its total solar-energy rejection, visible light transmission or warranty coverage.

Separate shade from heat performance

Visible light transmission describes light passing through the glazing, while solar-performance measures describe a different property. A dark film is not necessarily the strongest performer for cabin comfort. Infrared-rejection percentages may also be measured over different wavelength ranges, so do not compare headline percentages without checking the test method and product data.

Compare ceramic, carbon and dyed options

Choose based on the specific products available, budget and intended windows rather than assuming a universal ranking. A lower-cost option may suit an appearance-led rear-glazing job; a different specification may make sense where solar comfort is the priority. Ask to see a sample and consider visibility in poor light as well as the daytime appearance.

Legal limits still apply

Ceramic technology does not exempt a film from UK front-window rules. For vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985, the windscreen must allow at least 75% light through and front side windows at least 70%. The test concerns the combined glass and film. Ask about suitability before choosing any front-glazing treatment.
