UK window tint law: a practical guide

Vehicle tinting is not simply a matter of choosing a shade. The glass and film are assessed together, and front glazing has minimum light-transmission requirements. This guide summarises the rules; check current government guidance and ask for a suitability assessment before work begins.

The main limits

For vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985, the windscreen must let at least 75% of light through and the front side windows must let at least 70% through. For vehicles first used before that date, the stated minimum for the windscreen and front side windows is 70%.

Why the glass matters as well

The measurement concerns the combined glass and film. A film that appears light in isolation may still be unsuitable when fitted to glass that already has some tint.

What about the rear windows?

The front-window limits are the part most often relevant to an installation. Rear passenger windows and the rear windscreen do not have the same stated light-transmission limits, although visibility, vehicle design and safe driving still matter. A professional installer should discuss the intended windows rather than assume every pane can take the same film.

Before booking

  • Tell the installer the vehicle make, model and year.
  • Say whether any film is already fitted and needs removal.
  • Ask which windows and film specification are proposed.
  • Keep the product and installation details for your records.
